PRESS RELEASE

DÉNES KALEV FARKAS (1974) will open his personal exhibition A Day That Does Not Exist in Hobusepea gallery at 5pm on February 29th, 2012.

According to the artist, current art project deals with the idea that there is no way out and actually people are unaware of the idea where the „way out“ should lead them in the first place. Present exhibition repeatedly serves one and the same obsession; the artwork can be seen on both floors of the gallery. It seems as if the concept of today would not exist in calendars, even if the clocks keep ticking and time keeps running. Everything seems to be based on either anticipation or procrastination. Similarly to the operating system of a personal computer producing an error message in case of an inefficient search, the general ability of articulation and abstraction of a human being inevitably gets stuck when his or her daily activity in a socium is fruitless on the whole. Error: No results found.

Dénes Farkas has emerged into the Estonian contemporary art scene during the second part of 2000s with his refined black-and-white world of paper maquettes offering the art audience various comments and questions in the field of politics and society. Despite of the fact that Farkas has been awarded with the annual art prize of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia for his pervious personal exhibition held in Hobusepea gallery and his works belong to the collections of the Art Musem of Estonia as well as private collections, the artist belongs to the artists’s generation that uses art primarily as a critical tool in order to confront the Post-Soviet and neoliberal realities of Eastern Europe – the good old slogan „l’art pour l’art“ („art for art’s sake“) won’t apply to Farkas as well as to the artists of his age. Similarly to his former art projects, the current post-conceptual exposition is looking for its way out from the grey, boring environment symbolizing life with the help of paper maquettes, words and definitions torn out of encyclopedias. In principle, present exhibition has been built up as a single installation, spread out around the gallery space. Through the aesthetics of a „glitch“ (a minor technical malfunction), Farkas manipulates with only two repetitive elements: composition imitates a simple space where we apparently keep hitting a wall whereas around the corner there seems to be an opportunity for the way out – only that we won’t reach it. Error: No results found.

Press release by Andreas Trossek

Exhibition will be open until March 12th, 2012.

Supported by Cultural Endowment of Estonia and ArtPrint.

Exhibitions in Hobusepea gallery are supported by Estonian Ministry of Culture.
